Every woven basket that has ever fallen apart fell apart the same way. One stake end works loose at the rim, the weave has nothing holding it in place any more, and it unravels outward from that single point until the basket is firewood.

So the rim is where the money goes. Ours is bound over a core, which spreads the load along the top edge instead of concentrating it, and every stake end is tucked underneath and glued rather than cut off flush and left to lift. It costs more per basket and it is the difference between one Easter and fifteen.

Willow is the traditional material and the strongest. Seagrass is softer, lighter and much cheaper at volume. Rattan sits between the two and takes a dyed finish best. All three are natural fibres that mind where they are kept, which is a question we will ask you before recommending one.
