Pick up an old basket that is coming apart and follow the damage back. It always leads to the same place.

The rim holds the uprights

Every stake in the wall is held in position by the rim at the top.

It is the only thing stopping them moving.

One loose end is enough

Once a stake end lifts, the weave next to it has nothing to hold against.

It works loose in turn, and the damage travels outward.

Trimmed flush is the cheap version

Cut level with the rim, a stake end has nothing gripping it but friction.

Tucked underneath and glued, it cannot lift at all.

What to look for

Run a thumb around the underside of the rim.

Smooth tucked ends mean somebody built it to last. Sharp cut ends mean nobody did.
